En Liberia, la prevalencia del consumo de tabaco entre adultos de 15 años o más en 2022 se estimó en 5.9%, con una marcada diferencia según el género. Entre los hombres, la prevalencia fue notablemente mayor, alcanzando el 10.7%, mientras que en las mujeres fue de 1.2%. En comparación, en 2020 la prevalencia total de consumo de tabaco en adultos fue ligeramente superior, con un 6.3%, correspondiendo a un 11.3% entre los hombres y un 1.3% entre las mujeres. El número absoluto de personas fumadoras en 2022 se estimó en aproximadamente 181,602, lo que representa una leve disminución respecto a las 182,645 personas en 2020. La prevalencia de consumo diario de tabaco en adultos en 2017 fue del 7.9%, con un 14.7% entre los hombres y un 1.2% entre las mujeres. La mortalidad atribuible al tabaquismo sigue siendo un importante problema de salud pública en Liberia. En 2021, el consumo de tabaco fue responsable del 1.67% de todas las muertes, lo que equivale a 660 defunciones. Los datos desglosados por género muestran que el 2.35% de todas las muertes en hombres y el 0.84% en mujeres se atribuyeron al tabaquismo en 2021. Estas cifras resaltan el persistente desafío para la salud pública que representa el consumo de tabaco en Liberia, lo que requiere esfuerzos coordinados para reducir su impacto en la salud.
