En 2021, India contaba con aproximadamente 215.9 millones de personas que consumían tabaco sin combustión tradicional, lo que representaba una prevalencia del 21.4% en adultos. El consumo actual entre los hombres era considerablemente más alto, con un 29.6%, frente al 12.8% entre las mujeres. El uso diario fue reportado por el 18.2% de los adultos, incluyendo al 25.1% de los hombres y al 11.1% de las mujeres. En cuanto a la normativa, el tabaco sin combustión tradicional está permitido y regulado como producto de tabaco en India, por lo que su venta y consumo son legales, incluyendo la compra en línea. Sin embargo, el país aplica una prohibición de toda forma de publicidad de tabaco, exige advertencias sanitarias en los envases y establece la edad mínima para la venta en 18 años.
