En la India, la prevalencia de consumo de tabaco fumado entre adultos de 15 años o más se estimó en un 7,1 % en 2022, lo que refleja una disminución respecto al 8,1 % registrado en 2020. La prevalencia entre los hombres fue significativamente mayor, alcanzando el 12,8 % en 2022, en comparación con el 1,1 % observado entre las mujeres. Esta diferencia entre géneros se ha mantenido constante, ya que en 2020 la prevalencia en hombres era del 14,4 % y en mujeres del 1,40 %. El número absoluto de personas fumadoras en 2022 fue de aproximadamente 72.735.681 individuos, lo que representa una reducción respecto a los 80.481.112 registrados en 2020. Como referencia, la prevalencia diaria de tabaquismo en adultos en 2017 era del 8,6 %, con una prevalencia del 15,2 % en hombres y del 1,7 % en mujeres. La mortalidad atribuible al consumo de tabaco sigue siendo una preocupación importante de salud pública en la India, con 1.048.266 fallecimientos registrados en 2021, lo que representa el 8,92 % de todas las muertes en el país. De estas defunciones, 233.679 correspondieron a mujeres, lo que constituye el 4,59 % del total de muertes femeninas, mientras que 814.587 fueron hombres, representando el 12,23 % de todas las muertes masculinas. Estos datos ponen de manifiesto los constantes retos de salud pública asociados al consumo de tabaco en la India y resaltan la necesidad de implementar medidas efectivas que permitan reducir la prevalencia del consumo y la mortalidad relacionada.
