En Honduras, hasta 2022, la prevalencia de consumo de tabaco en adultos era del 12.2%, con una marcada diferencia entre géneros: el 22.7% de los hombres y el 1.7% de las mujeres fumaban. Esto equivale aproximadamente a 852,612 adultos fumadores. Como referencia, en 2015 la prevalencia de fumadores diarios en adultos fue del 10.3%, con un 19.6% en hombres y un 1.2% en mujeres. En cuanto al impacto en la salud, en 2021 el consumo de tabaco fue responsable del 5.68% de todas las muertes en el país, con una mayor tasa de mortalidad en hombres (7.72%) en comparación con las mujeres (3.21%). Esto representa que 4,139 muertes se atribuyeron al tabaquismo ese año, de las cuales 3,077 correspondieron a hombres y 1,062 a mujeres. Los datos muestran una ligera mejoría con respecto a 2016, cuando las muertes asociadas al tabaquismo representaban el 6.55% de todas las muertes en el país. Esta problemática de salud pública en curso resalta la necesidad de continuar reforzando los esfuerzos de salud pública y las medidas regulatorias para abordar el consumo de tabaco y sus consecuencias en la salud en Honduras.
