En Micronesia, la mortalidad asociada al consumo de tabaco representa un importante desafío para la salud pública. Según datos de 2021, las muertes relacionadas con el tabaquismo constituyeron el 17.89% de todos los fallecimientos en el país, lo que refleja un ligero aumento respecto al 17.39% registrado en 2016. El número anual de muertes atribuibles al tabaquismo ascendió a 146, con 102 defunciones entre hombres y 44 entre mujeres, lo que supone un incremento respecto a 2016, año en el que se contabilizaron 132 muertes en total, con 91 hombres y 41 mujeres. La tasa de mortalidad vinculada al consumo de tabaco en hombres fue del 22.42% en 2021, aumentando desde el 20.5% de 2016, mientras que en mujeres fue del 12.15% en 2021, comparada con el 10.5% registrado en 2016. Los datos sobre prevalencia de consumo diario de tabaco en adultos indican que la prevalencia era del 35.40%, con un 39.80% en hombres y un 25.40% en mujeres. Además, se estima que el número de fumadores diarios fue de aproximadamente 24,426 en 2017. Estas cifras ponen de manifiesto el impacto persistente del consumo de tabaco en la salud pública de Micronesia, lo que exige mantener y reforzar los esfuerzos para mitigar los efectos negativos del tabaquismo.
