En Bangladesh, la prevalencia del consumo de tabaco fumado entre adultos de 15 años o más se estimó en 16.8% en 2022, lo que representa una disminución respecto a años anteriores; en 2020, la prevalencia fue del 18.6% y en 2019, del 20.9%. El número absoluto de personas que fumaban tabaco en 2022 fue aproximadamente 20,395,570, una reducción en comparación con 21,861,299 en 2020 y 24,148,834 en 2019. Según los datos desglosados por sexo, la prevalencia entre los hombres en 2022 fue considerablemente mayor, con un 34.1%, frente al 0.4% en las mujeres. Este dato refleja una ligera disminución en los hombres respecto al 36.4% de 2020 y al 40.8% de 2019; en el caso de las mujeres, también se redujo en comparación con el 0.5% de 2020 y el 1% de 2019. En 2018, la prevalencia de consumo diario de tabaco entre adultos fue del 22.3%, con una prevalencia del 44.4% en hombres y del 0.9% en mujeres. En 2021, el consumo de tabaco causó 130,135 muertes en el país, lo que representó el 11.87% de todas las defunciones ese año. Los datos muestran que la mortalidad atribuible al consumo de tabaco representó el 16.83% de todas las muertes entre hombres y el 4.98% en mujeres. Estas cifras ponen de manifiesto los retos que enfrenta la salud pública en Bangladesh a causa del consumo de tabaco y resaltan la importancia de continuar con medidas y políticas públicas dirigidas a reducir sus impactos.
