In Austria, heated tobacco products (HTPs) are regulated and allowed. HTPs can be legally sold, purchased online, and used. However, health warnings on HTPs packaging are mandatory, there are certain flavour restrictions, and their use is restricted in public places. Excise taxes on HTPs are relatively low compared with cigarettes, ranging from about 10% to 50% of the cigarette excise tax.

Available data show that HTP prevalence has increased in Austria in recent years. In 2023, an estimated 237,891 adults were current HTP users, representing 3.1% of the adult population. In comparison, there were an estimated 152,000 HTP users in 2020, representing 2.0 percent of the adult population. Its daily use among adults was reported to be 1.6% which shows an increase from 0.6% daily use in 2020. In a survery conducted in 2023, 8.4% of the respondents stated that they had tried HTPs at least once.
