En Tailandia, el panorama del consumo de tabaco aporta información relevante sobre la prevalencia e impacto del tabaquismo en la población adulta. En 2022, se registraron 10,962,267 fumadores de 15 años o más, lo que representa una disminución significativa respecto a años anteriores. Esto indica que la prevalencia de tabaquismo en adultos se ubicó en 18.9%, con una marcada diferencia entre géneros: 37.7% en hombres y 1.8% en mujeres. En comparación, en 2020, estas cifras eran levemente superiores, con una prevalencia general de 19.4%, 38.2% en hombres y 1.9% en mujeres. La prevalencia de fumadores diarios adultos en 2021 fue de 15.3%, alcanzando el 30.5% en hombres y el 1.1% en mujeres. En cuanto al impacto en la salud, la mortalidad atribuible al tabaquismo en 2021 representó el 10.59% de todas las muertes en el país, es decir, 66,327 fallecimientos, con un 15.6% de todas las muertes masculinas y un 4.08% de todas las muertes femeninas. Estas cifras ponen de manifiesto los graves desafíos que el consumo de tabaco representa para la salud pública en Tailandia, lo que hace imprescindible mantener esfuerzos sostenidos para reducir sus efectos perjudiciales en la salud.
