Según la Estrategia Nacional de Control del Tabaco 2022-2030, hasta febrero de 2024 había aproximadamente 15.6 millones de fumadores en Pakistán, una cifra que representa una disminución respecto a los 17.5 millones de fumadores en 2022 y los 18.3 millones en 2020. La prevalencia de tabaquismo en adultos en 2023 se situó en 12.4%, un leve aumento frente al 12% registrado en 2022, pero una reducción en comparación con el 13.1% de 2020. Entre los hombres, la prevalencia del consumo de tabaco fue de 22.2% en 2023, por debajo del 22.7% en 2020, mientras que entre las mujeres fue de 2.1% en 2023, lo que representa una ligera disminución con respecto al 2.7% de 2022. Como referencia, en 2014 la prevalencia diaria de tabaquismo en adultos era del 11.5%, con un 20.1% en hombres y apenas un 2% en mujeres. En 2021, el consumo de tabaco provocó el 7.59% de todas las muertes en el país, lo que equivale a 130,593 fallecimientos relacionados con el tabaco, de los cuales 106,028 correspondieron a hombres y 24,565 a mujeres. A pesar de la reducción observada en los últimos años, estas cifras de prevalencia y mortalidad ponen de manifiesto el reto permanente que representa el tabaquismo para la salud pública en Pakistán, sirviendo como guía para las estrategias gubernamentales destinadas a disminuir su impacto en la salud.

Reducción de daños del tabaco: un problema candente para Asia

El enfoque de este informe de GSTHR es Asia. El sesenta por ciento de los fumadores del mundo vive en esta región y aquí se produce casi la mitad de las muertes mundiales por fumar. Asia también alberga a nueve de cada diez consumidores de tabaco sin combustión (SLT), lo que provoca altas tasas de cáncer oral. En varios países, la salud pública se ve gravemente socavada cuando los gobiernos controlan o tienen una participación significativa en empresas tabacaleras nacionales. Se necesitan nuevas soluciones para abordar la amenaza para la salud pública que suponen fumar y el consumo de tabaco, pero los productos de nicotina más seguros están prohibidos en muchos países. ¿Mejoraría la reducción de daños del tabaco la salud pública en Asia? Y, de ser así, ¿cuáles son los obstáculos que se interponen en su camino?
