In Mali, the current prevalence of tobacco smoking among adults aged 15 years and older was reported to be 6% in 2024, with a notable gender disparity. Male adults exhibited a higher smoking prevalence of 11.5%, while female adults had a significantly lower prevalence of 0.4%. These figures contrast with earlier data, such as 2020, when the overall adult current smoking prevalence was slightly higher at 6.6%, with a prevalence of 12.7% among males and prevalence of 0.6% among females. The number of current smokers in Mali in 2024 was estimated to be 782,000. Smoking-related deaths accounted for 1.83% of all deaths in the country in 2021. This represents 4,273 deaths. The gender-specific mortality rates for smoking-related deaths were 2.41% among males and 1.09% among females. This corresponds to 3,157 male deaths and 1,116 female deaths. These statistics underscore the public health implications of smoking in Mali, emphasising the need for concerted interventions to reduce smoking rates and its associated health risks.
These rates are modelled using all national survey data published since 1990 to estimate the underlying prevalence trends by sex, then applying age-standardization to allow comparison with other countries. They do not necessarily resemble country data from 2015
