In Liberia, the prevalence of tobacco smoking among adults aged 15 years and older in 2022 was estimated to be 5.9%, with a significant gender disparity. Among males, the prevalence of smoking was markedly higher with 10.7%, while females had a prevalence of 1.2%. In comparison, in 2020, the overall adult smoking prevalence was slightly higher at 6.3%, with prevalence among males at 11.3% and prevalence among females at 1.3%. The absolute number of smokers in 2022 was estimated to be approximately 181,602, showing a slight decrease from 182,645 smokers in 2020. The adult daily tobacco smoking prevalence in 2017 was 7.9%, with a prevalence of 14.7% among males and 1.2% among females.
Smoking-related mortality also remains a significant public health concern in Liberia. In 2021, smoking accounted for 1.67% of all deaths, corresponding to 660 deaths. Gender-specific data indicated that 2.35% of all male deaths and 0.84% of all female deaths were attributable to smoking in 2021. These statistics underscore the persistent public health challenge posed by tobacco smoking in Liberia, requiring concerted efforts to reduce its health impacts.
