In Switzerland, smoking is allowed but subject to regulations, and cigarettes are regulated as tobacco products. Under these regulations, not all forms of tobacco advertising are banned. Cigarettes can be purchased online, through vending machines, and imported for trade with appropriate license. Notably, the World Health Organisation (WHO) reports that there are no minimum age restrictions on sales and no legal restrictions exist on smoking in public places. Cigarettes in Switzerland are subject to an excise value of 26.29% with a total taxation rate of 59.02%.

Smoking remains high in Switzerland. In 2024, there were approximately 1.6 million current smokers among adults aged 15 years and older, representing an adult current smoking prevalence of 21%. Smoking prevalence was higher among adult males (22.3%) than among adult females (19.7%) in 2024. The overall current prevalence was 23.3% in 2022. In 2021, smoking led to an estimated 7,348 deaths in the country, of which 4,935 deaths were among males and 2,413 deaths were among females. Overall, smoking made 10.54% of all deaths in Switzerland, including 14.39% of male deaths and 6.81% of female deaths.
