В Папуа — Новой Гвинее по состоянию на 2024 год распространённость употребления табака среди взрослых в возрасте 15 лет и старше оценивалась в 40,1%. В эту цифру входит распространённость курения среди мужчин — 54,4% и среди женщин — 25,1%. Общее число тех, кто курят, в 2024 году составило примерно 2,8 миллиона человек. Для сравнения, по данным на декабрь 2020 года, общая распространённость курения составляла 40,5%, причём был отмечен небольшой спад среди женщин и мужчин — с 25,4% и 55,2% соответственно. В качестве справки: в 2017 году ежедневное курение среди взрослых составляло 31,1%, в том числе среди мужчин — 42,2%, а среди женщин — 19,8%. Смертность, связанная с курением, по-прежнему вызывает серьёзное беспокойство: в 2021 году она составила 8,81% всех случаев смерти в стране, включая 9,57% у мужчин и 7,73% у женщин, что соответствует примерно 7068 случаям смерти, связанным с курением за этот год. Для сравнения: ранее доля курения в структуре общей смертности достигала 18,9%, что составляло 12,841 смертельный случай. Эти показатели свидетельствуют о снижении числа смертей, связанных с курением, в последние годы. Представленные данные подчеркивают сохраняющиеся проблемы общественного здравоохранения, связанные с употреблением табака в Папуа — Новой Гвинее, и необходимость продолжения мер по снижению негативных последствий для здоровья населения.
