В Лаосе распространённость курения среди взрослого населения остаётся серьёзной проблемой общественного здравоохранения. По оценкам Всемирной организации здравоохранения (ВОЗ), к 2024 году 22,7% взрослых в возрасте 15 лет и старше курят, при этом наблюдается явное гендерное различие: курят 41% мужчин и 4,5% женщин. Общее количество людей, употребляющих табачные изделия, в стране составляло примерно 1,2 миллиона человек. В сравнении с предыдущими годами распространённость курения среди мужчин снизилась с 45% в 2020 году, а среди женщин — с 5,2% в тот же период. Для справки, в 2017 году ежедневная распространённость курения среди взрослых составляла 25,1%, среди женщин — 6,2%, среди мужчин — 44,7%. В 2021 году доля ежегодных случаев смерти, связанных с курением, достигала 12,77%, причём на мужчин приходилось 17,76%, а на женщин — 6,33%. Это означает, что общее число смертей, связанных с курением, достигло 6 503 случаев — 5 100 среди мужчин и 1 403 среди женщин. Эти данные подчёркивают продолжающееся негативное влияние курения на здоровье населения Лаоса и необходимость дальнейших регулирующих и профилактических мер.
