En Laos, la prevalencia del consumo de tabaco entre la población adulta sigue siendo una importante preocupación de salud pública. La Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) estimó que, en 2022, el 23.8% de los adultos de 15 años o más eran fumadores. Esta cifra refleja una marcada disparidad de género, ya que el 43.2% de los hombres y el 4.4% de las mujeres fuman. El número total de fumadores en el país se situó en aproximadamente 1,189,040 personas. En comparación con datos previos, la prevalencia del tabaquismo entre los hombres ha experimentado un leve descenso desde el 45% registrado en 2020, y entre las mujeres desde el 5.2% en ese mismo año. Como referencia, la prevalencia diaria de tabaquismo en adultos en 2017 fue del 25.1%, con un 6.2% entre mujeres y un 44.7% entre hombres. El porcentaje anual de muertes atribuibles al consumo de tabaco fue del 12.77% en 2021, afectando de manera desproporcionada a los hombres con un 17.76%, frente al 6.33% en mujeres. Esto significa que el número total de muertes relacionadas con el tabaquismo ascendió a 6,503, de las cuales 5,100 correspondieron a hombres y 1,403 a mujeres. Estas cifras ponen de manifiesto el impacto persistente del consumo de tabaco en la salud pública de Laos y destacan la necesidad de mantener y fortalecer las medidas regulatorias y preventivas.
