В Гватемале распространённость курения табака и связанные с этим случаи смерти среди взрослого населения в возрасте 15 лет и старше остаются серьёзной проблемой общественного здравоохранения. По данным на 2024 год, распространённость среди мужчин составляет 21,2%, среди женщин — 1,7%, а общий показатель по стране — 11%, что эквивалентно примерно 1,4 миллионам человек, которые курят. Для сравнения, в 2020 году показатели были немного ниже: 21% среди мужчин и 1,6% среди женщин. Для справки, ежедневная распространённость курения среди взрослого населения в 2017 году составляла 3,7%, при этом у мужчин этот показатель был 8,3%, а у женщин — 0,9%. За 2021 год зарегистрировано 3057 случаев смерти, связанных с курением табака, что составляет около 2,71% всех смертей: 3,31% среди мужчин и 1,9% среди женщин. По сравнению с 2016 годом, когда было зарегистрировано 2817 случаев смерти, связанных с курением, что соответствовало 3,45% всех случаев, эти показатели отражают некоторое снижение. В совокупности эти данные подчёркивают продолжающееся влияние курения на общественное здоровье в Гватемале и актуальность внедрения эффективных мер здравоохранения для решения этой проблемы.
