В Коста-Рике курение разрешено с определёнными ограничениями. Продажа сигарет разрешена, однако их покупка через интернет или через торговые автоматы не допускается. Импорт сигарет для торговли возможен при наличии лицензии. На упаковке сигарет обязательно размещаются предупреждения о вреде здоровью, а минимальный возраст для покупки сигарет составляет 18 лет. Также действуют законодательные ограничения на курение в общественных местах и полный запрет на рекламу сигарет. Общая ставка налогообложения на сигареты составляет 73%. По состоянию на 2024 год в Коста-Рике насчитывалось примерно 323 000 человек, которые курят, что соответствует распространённости текущего курения среди взрослых в 7,8%. Среди взрослых мужчин этот показатель составлял 11,8%, а среди женщин — 4%. Для сравнения: в 2015 году распространённость ежедневного курения среди взрослых составляла 5,8–8,7% у мужчин и 2,9% у женщин. В 2021 году, по оценкам, 20 случаев смерти были связаны с курением табака, включая 15 мужчин и 5 женщин.
