В Афганистане по оценкам на 2024 год насчитывалось примерно 2,1 миллиона человек в возрасте 15 лет и старше, которые курят табак. Распространённость текущего курения среди взрослых составляла 8,7%, при этом отмечалась значительная разница между мужчинами и женщинами: среди мужчин — 15,8%, среди женщин — 1,6%. Это указывает на снижение по сравнению с предыдущими годами: например, в 2020 году среди мужчин распространённость курения составляла 17,7%, а среди женщин — 2,1%. В 2019 году распространённость ежедневного курения табака среди взрослых оценивалась в 7,6%; среди мужчин — 12,6%, среди женщин — 2,2%. Общее количество смертей, связанных с курением табака, составило 9 151 случай в 2021 году, при этом среди мужчин — 6 555 случаев, среди женщин — 2 596 случаев. Таким образом, смертность, связанная с курением табака, составила 3,36% всех смертей в стране, при более высоком показателе среди мужчин — 4,27% против 2,18% среди женщин. Эти данные подчёркивают, что курение табака продолжает представлять серьёзную проблему для системы здравоохранения Афганистана, и демонстрируют необходимость дальнейшего развития и усиления мер общественного здравоохранения для снижения заболеваемости и смертности, связанных с курением, в стране.
