W Arabii Saudyjskiej palenie tytoniu wśród osób dorosłych w wieku 15 lat i więcej pozostaje istotnym problemem zdrowia publicznego. W 2022 roku liczba osób palących tytoń wynosiła około 4 310 784, co oznacza stopniowy wzrost w porównaniu z 3 211 720 w 2019 roku. Odsetek palących dorosłych wyniósł w 2022 roku 16,2%, co stanowi nieznaczny wzrost względem 15,6% w 2020 roku oraz 12,7% w 2019 roku. Szczególnie wysoki był odsetek wśród mężczyzn – 26,3% w 2022 roku, w porównaniu do 24,7% w 2020 roku i 24,2% w 2019 roku. Wśród kobiet odsetek ten w 2022 roku wyniósł 1,9%, co oznacza niewielki wzrost w stosunku do 1,8% w 2020 roku oraz 1,2% w 2019 roku. W 2019 roku rozpowszechnienie codziennego palenia tytoniu wśród dorosłych wynosiło 15,2%, z czego 24% stanowili mężczyźni, a 2% kobiety. Palenie tytoniu było przyczyną 14 238 zgonów w kraju w 2021 roku, w tym 12 174 zgony wśród mężczyzn, co stanowiło 11,6% wszystkich zgonów mężczyzn, oraz 2 064 zgony wśród kobiet, co stanowiło 4,06% wszystkich zgonów kobiet. Ogółem zgony związane z paleniem tytoniu stanowiły 9,14% wszystkich zgonów w tym samym roku. Te dane podkreślają nieustające wyzwanie, jakim jest palenie tytoniu w Arabii Saudyjskiej, i wskazują na potrzebę dalszych działań zdrowotnych i regulacyjnych mających na celu ograniczenie negatywnego wpływu palenia na zdrowie publiczne.

Tematem tego opracowania GSTHR jest Azja. Sześćdziesiąt procent palaczy na świecie mieszka w tym regionie i dochodzi tu do niemal połowy zgonów na świecie spowodowanych paleniem. Azja jest również domem dla dziewięciu na dziesięciu użytkowników tytoniu bezdymnego (SLT), co prowadzi do wysokiej zachorowalności na raka jamy ustnej. W wielu krajach zdrowie publiczne jest poważnie zagrożone, ponieważ rządy kontrolują krajowe firmy tytoniowe lub mają w nich znaczące udziały. Potrzebne są nowe rozwiązania, aby przeciwdziałać zagrożeniu dla zdrowia publicznego wynikającemu z palenia i używania tytoniu - jednak bezpieczniejsze produkty nikotynowe są zakazane w wielu krajach. Czy redukcja szkód związanych z tytoniem poprawiłaby zdrowie publiczne w Azji? A jeśli tak - jakie przeszkody stoją jej na drodze?
