W 2022 roku szacowany odsetek palących dorosłych w wieku 15 lat i więcej wynosił 20%, przy znaczącej różnicy między płciami: paliło 38,1% mężczyzn i 2,8% kobiet. Dane z poprzednich lat wskazują na stopniowy spadek tego wskaźnika; w 2020 roku ogólna częstość występowania palenia wynosiła 19,9%, a odsetek palaczy wśród mężczyzn i kobiet odpowiednio 37,6% i 2,9%. Tendencja spadkowa widoczna jest również w liczbie osób palących, która zmniejszyła się z 224 908 w 2019 roku do 210 664 w 2022 roku. W 2021 roku liczba zgonów związanych z paleniem wyniosła 1 301, co stanowiło 9,86% wszystkich zgonów w kraju. Dane dotyczące płci pokazują, że w tym samym roku odnotowano 1 037 zgonów wśród mężczyzn i 265 wśród kobiet spowodowanych skutkami palenia.
