W 2022 roku liczba osób palących w Bahrajnie w wieku 15 lat i starszych została oszacowana na 261 721. Wskaźnik rozpowszechnienia palenia wśród dorosłych wynosił 18,1%, przy wyraźnej dysproporcji między płciami: 25,7% wśród mężczyzn oraz 4,9% wśród kobiet. Stanowi to niewielki spadek w porównaniu z 2020 rokiem, kiedy ogólny wskaźnik wynosił 19,5%, w tym 26,7% wśród mężczyzn i 4,5% wśród kobiet. Tendencje na przestrzeni lat wskazują na systematyczny spadek częstości palenia wśród mężczyzn – z 33,9% w 2019 roku do 25,7% w 2022 roku. W tym czasie wskaźnik palenia wśród kobiet zmieniał się nieznacznie – z 3,8% w 2019 roku do 4,9% w 2022 roku. Szacowany odsetek codziennych palaczy wśród dorosłych w 2019 roku wynosił 15%, przy 23,5% wśród mężczyzn i 3,3% wśród kobiet. Palenie tytoniu było przyczyną 581 zgonów w 2021 roku, co odpowiadało 9,24% wszystkich przypadków śmiertelnych. Dane szczegółowe według płci pokazują, że 478 spośród tych zgonów dotyczyło mężczyzn (11,69% wszystkich zgonów wśród mężczyzn), a 103 – kobiet (4,69% wszystkich zgonów wśród kobiet). Powyższe dane podkreślają wyzwanie zdrowotne, jakie stanowi palenie w Bahrajnie, oraz wskazują na konieczność podejmowania działań ukierunkowanych na ograniczenie rozpowszechnienia palenia i związanej z nim śmiertelności.

Tematem tego opracowania GSTHR jest Azja. Sześćdziesiąt procent palaczy na świecie mieszka w tym regionie i dochodzi tu do niemal połowy zgonów na świecie spowodowanych paleniem. Azja jest również domem dla dziewięciu na dziesięciu użytkowników tytoniu bezdymnego (SLT), co prowadzi do wysokiej zachorowalności na raka jamy ustnej. W wielu krajach zdrowie publiczne jest poważnie zagrożone, ponieważ rządy kontrolują krajowe firmy tytoniowe lub mają w nich znaczące udziały. Potrzebne są nowe rozwiązania, aby przeciwdziałać zagrożeniu dla zdrowia publicznego wynikającemu z palenia i używania tytoniu - jednak bezpieczniejsze produkty nikotynowe są zakazane w wielu krajach. Czy redukcja szkód związanych z tytoniem poprawiłaby zdrowie publiczne w Azji? A jeśli tak - jakie przeszkody stoją jej na drodze?
