W Iranie palenie tytoniu pozostaje poważnym wyzwaniem zdrowia publicznego. W 2022 roku liczba palaczy wśród osób w wieku 15 lat i starszych wynosiła około 6 032 121. Ogólna rozpowszechnienie używania tytoniu wśród dorosłych oszacowano na 9,5%, przy wyraźnej różnicy między płciami: 17,8% wśród mężczyzn i 1,1% wśród kobiet. Dane te wskazują na niewielki spadek w porównaniu z 2020 rokiem, kiedy ogólna rozpowszechnienie wynosiła 10,2%, w tym 19,2% wśród mężczyzn i 1,2% wśród kobiet. W 2016 roku codzienne palenie tytoniu deklarowało 13,6% dorosłych, z czego 24,4% stanowili mężczyźni, a 3,8% kobiety. W 2021 roku odnotowano 34 676 zgonów przypisywanych paleniu tytoniu — 28 632 wśród mężczyzn i 6 044 wśród kobiet. Zgony związane z paleniem tytoniu stanowiły 6,09% wszystkich zgonów, przy czym odsetek ten był wyższy wśród mężczyzn (8,33%) niż kobiet (2,68%). Statystyki te podkreślają trwające wyzwanie, jakim jest palenie tytoniu w Iranie, oraz konieczność dalszego wprowadzania działań na rzecz zdrowia publicznego ukierunkowanych na ograniczenie jego negatywnego wpływu na zdrowie.

Tematem tego opracowania GSTHR jest Azja. Sześćdziesiąt procent palaczy na świecie mieszka w tym regionie i dochodzi tu do niemal połowy zgonów na świecie spowodowanych paleniem. Azja jest również domem dla dziewięciu na dziesięciu użytkowników tytoniu bezdymnego (SLT), co prowadzi do wysokiej zachorowalności na raka jamy ustnej. W wielu krajach zdrowie publiczne jest poważnie zagrożone, ponieważ rządy kontrolują krajowe firmy tytoniowe lub mają w nich znaczące udziały. Potrzebne są nowe rozwiązania, aby przeciwdziałać zagrożeniu dla zdrowia publicznego wynikającemu z palenia i używania tytoniu - jednak bezpieczniejsze produkty nikotynowe są zakazane w wielu krajach. Czy redukcja szkód związanych z tytoniem poprawiłaby zdrowie publiczne w Azji? A jeśli tak - jakie przeszkody stoją jej na drodze?
