En Irán, la prevalencia del consumo de tabaco ha sido una preocupación importante de salud pública. En 2022, se estimaba que había aproximadamente 6,032,121 fumadores entre la población de 15 años o más. La prevalencia general del consumo de tabaco en adultos se calculó en 9.5%, con una marcada diferencia entre géneros: 17.8% en hombres y 1.1% en mujeres. Estas cifras representan una leve disminución respecto a 2020, cuando la prevalencia era de 10.2% en general, con 19.2% en hombres y 1.2% en mujeres. En 2016, la prevalencia diaria de consumo de tabaco en adultos fue de 13.6%, con 24.4% en hombres y 3.8% en mujeres. El número anual de muertes atribuibles al consumo de tabaco en 2021 fue de 34,676, de las cuales 28,632 correspondieron a hombres y 6,044 a mujeres. La mortalidad relacionada con el tabaco representó el 6.09% de todos los fallecimientos, siendo el porcentaje más elevado en hombres (8.33%) en comparación con las mujeres (2.68%). Estas estadísticas ponen de manifiesto el desafío persistente que representa el consumo de tabaco en Irán y evidencian la necesidad de mantener medidas de salud pública para abordar los impactos del tabaco en la salud.

Reducción de daños del tabaco: un problema candente para Asia

El enfoque de este informe de GSTHR es Asia. El sesenta por ciento de los fumadores del mundo vive en esta región y aquí se produce casi la mitad de las muertes mundiales por fumar. Asia también alberga a nueve de cada diez consumidores de tabaco sin combustión (SLT), lo que provoca altas tasas de cáncer oral. En varios países, la salud pública se ve gravemente socavada cuando los gobiernos controlan o tienen una participación significativa en empresas tabacaleras nacionales. Se necesitan nuevas soluciones para abordar la amenaza para la salud pública que suponen fumar y el consumo de tabaco, pero los productos de nicotina más seguros están prohibidos en muchos países. ¿Mejoraría la reducción de daños del tabaco la salud pública en Asia? Y, de ser así, ¿cuáles son los obstáculos que se interponen en su camino?
