Nauru Background

En Nauru, fumar tabaco está permitido pero sujeto a algunas restricciones. Es legal vender, comprar en línea e importar cigarrillos con fines comerciales, aunque está prohibida su adquisición en máquinas expendedoras. La normativa exige advertencias sanitarias en los paquetes, limita el consumo en lugares públicos y establece la edad mínima de compra en 18 años. Se aplica una tasa impositiva total de 0.42 sobre los cigarrillos. A pesar de estas medidas, el consumo de tabaco sigue siendo muy común en Nauru. En 2022, se estimó que el 46.3% de la población adulta eran fumadores actuales; de ellos, el 45.3% eran mujeres y el 47.3% hombres. En 2021 se registraron 15 muertes atribuibles al tabaco, lo que representó el 16.47% de todas las defunciones, incluyendo el 12.76% de las muertes femeninas y el 19.32% de las masculinas.
