En Nepal, el número estimado de personas fumadoras de tabaco de 15 años o más fue de aproximadamente 3,095,366 en 2022, lo que refleja una disminución notable respecto a años anteriores. En 2019, la cantidad de fumadores se había registrado en aproximadamente 4,009,204. En 2022, la prevalencia de consumo de tabaco entre hombres fue del 25.6%, mientras que entre mujeres fue del 4.7%. Esto representa una reducción significativa respecto a 2019, cuando la prevalencia entre hombres y mujeres era del 33.0% y 8.1%, respectivamente. La tasa total de prevalencia entre adultos en 2022 fue del 14.5%, frente al 20.5% registrado en 2019. La prevalencia de fumadores diarios adultos en 2019 era del 13.3%, con un 20.7% en hombres y 6.7% en mujeres. Las muertes relacionadas con el consumo de tabaco representaron el 11.13% de todos los fallecimientos en el país en 2021, con un 12.65% de las muertes entre hombres y un 9.2% entre mujeres. El número total de decesos atribuibles al tabaquismo en 2021 fue de 28,110, con cifras específicas de 17,869 en hombres y 10,241 en mujeres. Estas estadísticas ponen de manifiesto el desafío persistente que supone el consumo de tabaco en Nepal y destacan la necesidad de aplicar estrategias de salud pública y medidas regulatorias eficaces.
