En Mozambique, los datos disponibles destacan una prevalencia significativa del consumo de tabaco y sus impactos asociados en la salud. El informe Global Burden of Disease de 2021 indica que se registraron 7,363 muertes atribuibles al consumo de tabaco, lo que representa el 2.4% de todas las muertes en el país. Los datos desglosados por género muestran que 6,111 de estas muertes correspondieron a hombres, equivalentes al 3.62% de todas las muertes masculinas, mientras que 1,252 ocurrieron entre mujeres, correspondientes al 0.91% de los decesos femeninos en el país. Al comparar estas cifras con los datos previos de 2016, se observa una disminución en el número anual de muertes relacionadas con el tabaquismo, que anteriormente se reportaba en 10,058, representando el 4.31% de todas las muertes. En 2020, la prevalencia de consumo de tabaco entre adultos fue del 12.2%. Este porcentaje fue considerablemente mayor en hombres, con un 22.2%, en comparación con un 3.2% en mujeres. Esta tendencia indica un descenso en comparación con 2019, cuando la prevalencia general era del 13.9%, con un 23.9% en hombres y un 3.9% en mujeres. El número de personas fumadoras en 2020 se estimó en aproximadamente 2,041,242, frente a 2,268,470 en 2019. La prevalencia de tabaquismo diario entre adultos en 2017 fue del 13.2%, con un 23.5% en hombres y un 3.7% en mujeres. Estas cifras evidencian que, pese a una ligera reducción en la prevalencia y mortalidad en los últimos años, el consumo de tabaco sigue constituyendo un reto importante para la salud pública en Mozambique.
