En Haití, la prevalencia del consumo de tabaco entre personas de 15 años o más se estimó en 7,3% en 2022, según la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS). Esta cifra representa un leve aumento respecto al 6,9% registrado en 2020, aunque es inferior al 8,5% observado en 2019. La prevalencia entre los hombres fue considerablemente mayor, alcanzando el 12,6% en 2022, en comparación con el 2,3% entre las mujeres. Esta diferencia entre géneros se mantuvo a lo largo de los años, con tasas consistentemente más altas en hombres: 11,2% en 2020 y 13,5% en 2019. El número de fumadores en 2022 se estimó en aproximadamente 564,796, lo que indica un aumento respecto a los 515,117 fumadores contabilizados en 2020, pero una disminución frente a los 631,176 registrados en 2019. Como referencia, la prevalencia de fumadores diarios adultos en 2017 fue de 8,9%, con una prevalencia de 16,1% entre los hombres y 2,1% entre las mujeres. En cuanto a la mortalidad, las muertes atribuibles al consumo de tabaco representaron el 2,24% del total de fallecimientos en el país en 2021, lo que equivale a 2,934 muertes asociadas al tabaquismo. Los datos desglosados por género muestran que el 2,82% de estas muertes correspondieron a hombres y el 1,59% a mujeres. Estas estadísticas ponen de manifiesto el desafío constante para la salud pública que representa el consumo de tabaco en Haití y la necesidad de mantener los esfuerzos para reducir tanto la prevalencia del tabaquismo como las muertes relacionadas con este hábito.
