En 2022, la prevalencia del consumo de tabaco entre adultos en Egipto fue significativa, con una tasa general del 24.7% en personas de 15 años o más. Esta prevalencia fue considerablemente mayor en los hombres, con un 48.9%, en comparación con solo el 0.3% en las mujeres. El número total de fumadores en Egipto ascendió aproximadamente a 16,894,895 en 2022. En comparación, en 2020 la prevalencia del tabaquismo en adultos fue ligeramente menor, situándose en 21.1%, con 41.8% de fumadores hombres y 0.3% de mujeres. En 2019, la prevalencia del consumo de tabaco fue del 21.4% en términos generales, con un 42.3% en hombres y un 0.4% en mujeres. En 2017, la prevalencia de fumadores adultos diarios fue del 18.4%, con 35.3% entre hombres y 0.4% entre mujeres. La mortalidad asociada al tabaquismo en 2021 representó el 11% de todas las muertes, con un total de 78,337 fallecidos, de los cuales 66,464 eran hombres y 11,873 mujeres. Esto indica que el porcentaje anual de muertes atribuidas al consumo de tabaco en 2021 fue del 15.6% entre los hombres y del 4.16% entre las mujeres. Estas cifras ponen de manifiesto el desafío persistente para la salud pública que representa el consumo de tabaco en Egipto, lo que exige mantener los esfuerzos destinados a reducir sus impactos en la salud de la población.
