En 2022, se estimó que el número de personas fumadoras en Baréin de 15 años o más era de 261,721. La prevalencia de tabaquismo en adultos fue del 18.1%, con una marcada diferencia entre géneros: 25.7% entre los hombres y 4.9% entre las mujeres. Esto representa una leve disminución respecto a 2020, cuando la prevalencia general era del 19.5%, con una prevalencia masculina del 26.7% y femenina del 4.5%. La tendencia a lo largo de los años muestra una reducción en las tasas de tabaquismo entre los hombres, pasando del 33.9% en 2019 al 25.7% en 2022; mientras tanto, la tasa femenina ha variado ligeramente, de 3.8% en 2019 a 4.9% en 2022. En 2019, la prevalencia de consumo diario de tabaco en adultos se estimó en 15%, con una prevalencia del 23.5% entre los hombres y del 3.3% entre las mujeres. En cuanto a la mortalidad, el tabaquismo fue responsable de 581 muertes en 2021, lo que equivale al 9.24% de todos los fallecimientos. El enfoque de este informe de GSTHR es Asia. El sesenta por ciento de los fumadores del mundo vive en esta región y aquí se produce casi la mitad de las muertes mundiales por fumar. Asia también alberga a nueve de cada diez consumidores de tabaco sin combustión (SLT), lo que provoca altas tasas de cáncer oral. En varios países, la salud pública se ve gravemente socavada cuando los gobiernos controlan o tienen una participación significativa en empresas tabacaleras nacionales. Se necesitan nuevas soluciones para abordar la amenaza para la salud pública que suponen fumar y el consumo de tabaco, pero los productos de nicotina más seguros están prohibidos en muchos países. ¿Mejoraría la reducción de daños del tabaco la salud pública en Asia?
