En Afganistán, en 2022 había aproximadamente 2,135,588 personas fumadoras de tabaco de 15 años o más, según estimaciones basadas en la prevalencia bruta. La tasa de prevalencia de tabaquismo en adultos se reportó en 9.2%, con una diferencia significativa entre géneros: 16.6% en hombres y 1.8% en mujeres. Esto representa una disminución respecto a años anteriores, ya que en 2020 la prevalencia entre hombres fue de 17.7% y entre mujeres de 2.1%. En 2019, la prevalencia de consumo diario de tabaco en adultos fue de 7.6%, también con diferencias notables entre géneros: 12.6% en hombres y 2.2% en mujeres. El número total de muertes atribuidas al consumo de tabaco fue de 9,151 en 2021, de las cuales 6,555 correspondieron a hombres y 2,596 a mujeres. Esto indica que las muertes relacionadas con el consumo de tabaco representaron el 3.36% del total de fallecimientos en el país, con un mayor impacto en hombres (4.27%), en comparación con las mujeres (2.18%). Estas cifras ponen de manifiesto el desafío continuo que representa el tabaquismo para la salud pública en Afganistán y demuestran la necesidad de mantener y fortalecer las medidas de salud pública dirigidas a reducir la morbilidad y mortalidad asociadas al consumo de tabaco.
