En Myanmar, la prevalencia del consumo de tabaco sigue siendo un importante desafío para la salud pública. Según la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS), la proporción de adultos de 15 años o más que fuma tabaco se estimó en un 19.5% en 2022, frente al 19.7% registrado en 2020. Entre los hombres, la prevalencia en 2022 fue considerablemente mayor, con un 36.5%, en comparación con el 3.1% observado entre las mujeres, lo que evidencia una persistente disparidad de género en las tasas de consumo. Se estimó que el número total de personas fumadoras alcanzó aproximadamente los 7.9 millones en 2022, en comparación con 7.8 millones en 2020, lo que representa un ligero aumento. Como referencia, la prevalencia diaria de tabaquismo en adultos en 2017 fue del 16.2%, con una tasa del 28.2% entre los hombres y del 5.1% entre las mujeres. Los datos de 2021 indican que el 11.17% de todas las muertes en el país fueron atribuibles al consumo de tabaco, cifra que incluye 40,450 fallecimientos relacionados con el consumo en hombres y 16,391 en mujeres. En términos porcentuales, esto equivale al 14.48% entre los hombres y al 7.14% entre las mujeres. Estas cifras ponen de manifiesto la necesidad de mantener y fortalecer los esfuerzos de salud pública para abordar el consumo de tabaco en Myanmar.
