MINT CIGS Sale and production of menthol cigarettes banned in Ireland from Wednesday under strict new EU rules
Health Minister Simon Harris said the purpose of the ban is to ensure that cigarette and tobacco products for sale can no longer include ingredients that would make smoking "more palatable". From Wednesday, it will be illegal for menthol fags to be made or sold anywhere in Ireland or across the rest of the European Union.
The EU imposed the ban amid concerns that menthol cigarettes are popular with youngsters who mistakenly think they are less harmful because they taste more palatable than regular tobacco.

Menthol ban to affect 200 million PJ Carroll cigarettes
PJ Carroll, the Irish subsidiary of British American Tobacco, has said over 200 million cigarettes it sells a year will be affected by the upcoming ban on menthol cigarettes.
The menthol cigarette ban, which takes effect on May 20, covers cigarettes which use flavours to relax the airways and make smoking easier on a person's throat. The change follows the completion of a four-year phasing-in period under a 2016 EU directive on tobacco products.

Vaping linked with heart problems
In adolescents the use of e-cigarettes doubles the risk of starting to smoke traditional cigarettes, states a position paper [...] "Vaping is marketed towards teenagers and the tobacco industry uses celebrities to promote it as being healthier than smoking," said senior author Professor Maja-Lisa Løchen of UiT The Arctic University of Norway, Tromsø.
"Legislation on the marketing and sales of e-cigarettes varies enormously between countries," said Professor Løchen. "Action is urgently needed to halt the growing use in young people. The World Health Organization (WHO) states that e-cigarettes are harmful to health."

WHO statement on heated tobacco products and the US FDA decision regarding IQOS
WHO takes this opportunity to remind Member States that are Parties to the WHO Framework Convention of Tobacco Control (FCTC) of their obligations under the Convention. Heated tobacco products are tobacco products, meaning that the WHO FCTC fully applies to these products. (Decision FCTC/COP8(22)) Specifically, Article 13.4(a) obliges Parties, to prohibit "all forms of tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship that promote a tobacco product by any means that are false, misleading or deceptive or likely to create an erroneous impression about its characteristics, health effects, hazards or emissions."
