W Papui-Nowej Gwinei szacunkowa częstość palenia tytoniu wśród osób dorosłych w wieku 15 lat i starszych wynosiła 40,4% w 2022 roku. W tej liczbie uwzględniono rozpowszechnienie palenia wśród mężczyzn na poziomie 55,4% oraz wśród kobiet 24,9%. Ogólna liczba osób palących wynosiła około 2 378 224. Dla porównania, wcześniejsze dane z grudnia 2020 roku wskazywały na podobną ogólną częstość palenia wynoszącą 40,5%, przy niewielkim spadku wśród kobiet z poziomu 25,4% oraz minimalnym wzroście wśród mężczyzn z 55,2%. Dla porównania, w 2017 roku odsetek codziennych palaczy wśród dorosłych wynosił 31,1%, z rozpowszechnieniem 42,2% wśród mężczyzn i 19,8% wśród kobiet. Śmiertelność związana z paleniem tytoniu pozostaje poważnym problemem zdrowia publicznego — w 2021 roku odpowiadała za 8,81% wszystkich zgonów w kraju, przy czym wśród mężczyzn odsetek ten wyniósł 9,57%, a wśród kobiet 7,73%. Przełożyło się to na szacunkowo 7 068 zgonów związanych z paleniem w tym roku. Dla porównania, w innym zestawieniu zgony związane z paleniem stanowiły większy odsetek ogółu zgonów — 18,9%, co przekładało się na 12 841 zgonów. Wskazuje to na spadek liczby zgonów spowodowanych paleniem tytoniu w ostatnich latach. Dane te podkreślają utrzymujące się wyzwania zdrowia publicznego związane z paleniem tytoniu w Papui-Nowej Gwinei oraz konieczność dalszych działań na rzecz ograniczenia jego negatywnych skutków zdrowotnych.
