En Samoa, la prevalencia del consumo de tabaco en adultos sigue siendo un problema importante de salud pública. En 2022, la tasa de prevalencia entre personas adultas de 15 años o más se estimó en 22,1%. En particular, la prevalencia de consumo entre los hombres fue notablemente mayor, con un 31%, frente al 13,1% en las mujeres. En comparación, en 2020 la prevalencia fue de 31,1% en hombres y 12,4% en mujeres. Se estima que en 2022 había aproximadamente 27,343 personas fumadoras en la población. Como referencia, en 2017 la prevalencia diaria de consumo de tabaco en adultos fue de 21,9%, con un 12,2% en mujeres y un 31% en hombres. El impacto del consumo de tabaco en la mortalidad también es considerable: en 2021, el tabaquismo representó el 15,15% de todas las defunciones a nivel nacional, incluyendo 145 hombres y 59 mujeres. Estos datos reflejan el desafío persistente que representan los problemas de salud asociados al consumo de tabaco en Samoa y ponen de relieve la importancia de continuar los esfuerzos de salud pública para disminuir la prevalencia del tabaquismo y sus consecuencias negativas para la salud.
