En Mauritania, el consumo de tabaco entre adultos ha mostrado tendencias destacadas en los últimos años. En 2022, se estimó que la prevalencia de tabaquismo entre personas de 15 años o más era del 7.9%, con una marcada diferencia entre géneros. La prevalencia en hombres fue considerablemente más alta, situándose en 14.8%, mientras que en mujeres fue de apenas 1.4%. Esto representa una leve disminución respecto a 2020, cuando la prevalencia general era del 8.8%, con un 16.3% en hombres y 1.4% en mujeres. En 2022, se reportó un estimado de 226,788 fumadores, lo que supone una reducción frente a los 238,080 registrados en 2020. Como referencia, en 2017 la prevalencia de consumo diario de tabaco en adultos era del 12.8%, alcanzando un 23.2% en hombres y un 3.2% en mujeres. La mortalidad atribuible al tabaco también aporta datos significativos: en 2021, el porcentaje anual de todas las muertes atribuibles al consumo de tabaco fue del 3.32%, con los hombres representando el 4.29% y las mujeres el 2.22% de los decesos. El número total de muertes atribuibles al tabaco fue de 832, de las cuales 572 correspondieron a hombres y 259 a mujeres. Esta cifra supone un descenso con respecto a 2016, año en el que el total de muertes fue de 932. Estos datos ponen de manifiesto el persistente desafío de salud pública que representa el tabaquismo en Mauritania, y la necesidad de mantener estrategias de intervención para reducir su impacto en la salud.
