En 2022, Indonesia registró una prevalencia significativa de consumo de tabaco entre la población adulta de 15 años o más. La prevalencia de tabaquismo en adultos fue del 36,7%, con una marcada diferencia entre géneros: el 71,2% de los hombres y el 2,2% de las mujeres eran fumadores. En comparación, en 2020 la prevalencia fue del 62,7% en hombres y del 2,5% en mujeres. El número absoluto de fumadores en 2022 se estimó en aproximadamente 74,8 millones, un aumento respecto a los 64,5 millones reportados en 2020. La prevalencia del consumo diario de tabaco en adultos en 2021 fue del 28,8%, con un 52,3% en hombres y un 1,4% en mujeres. La mortalidad vinculada al consumo de tabaco sigue siendo un problema crítico de salud pública en el país, representando el 12,27% de todas las muertes en 2021; en detalle, el 17,77% de los fallecimientos masculinos y el 5,04% de los fallecimientos femeninos se atribuyeron a causas relacionadas con el tabaco. Esto significa que el número de muertes atribuibles al tabaquismo fue de 268.614 en 2021, de las cuales 220.846 correspondieron a hombres y 47.767 a mujeres. Estas cifras ponen de manifiesto el desafío persistente que representa el consumo de tabaco en Indonesia y la necesidad de implementar intervenciones de salud pública sólidas para reducir tanto su alta prevalencia como la mortalidad asociada.

Reducción de daños del tabaco: un problema candente para Asia

El enfoque de este informe de GSTHR es Asia. El sesenta por ciento de los fumadores del mundo vive en esta región y aquí se produce casi la mitad de las muertes mundiales por fumar. Asia también alberga a nueve de cada diez consumidores de tabaco sin combustión (SLT), lo que provoca altas tasas de cáncer oral. En varios países, la salud pública se ve gravemente socavada cuando los gobiernos controlan o tienen una participación significativa en empresas tabacaleras nacionales. Countries With the Highest Number of Current Tobacco Smokers

This figure illustrates how almost half the world’s smokers (46%) live in just three countries. China has the largest number of current smokers at 290 million, followed by India at 116 million and Indonesia at 61 million. Together, these countries account for 467 million smokers.

Around the world high levels persist, despite major global initiatives led by WHO to reduce smoking – and despite the investment of millions of dollars in tobacco control to reduce the demand for and supply of tobacco (See Chapter 5 of the report: Burning Issues: The Global State of Tobacco Harm Reduction 2020). Average levels of smoking at a national level hide significant differences in the levels of smoking between males and females. Almost one third of men (30 percent) globally smoke compared with 10 percent of women.

According to WHO data for 2018, the prevalence of current tobacco smoking among men in 35 countries is above 40 per cent. This ranges from a staggering 69 percent in Kiribati, to 50 percent in Albania, Cyprus, Kyrgyzstan and Latvia, 45 percent in Greece, Mongolia and Republic of Moldova and 41 percent in Ukraine, the Russian Federation, Bangladesh and Samoa.

In a few high-prevalence countries, the level of female smoking is higher than the male smoking levels found in lower prevalence countries for example, in Kiribati, Nauru, Chile and Serbia, over 40 percent of women smoke compared to 78 other countries where less than 30 percent of men smoke. In some indigenous communities, such as the Māori, more women smoke than men (see Chapter 7 of the report: Burning Issues: The Global State of Tobacco Harm Reduction 2020). There is some evidence that for cultural or social reasons in some countries, there may be under-reporting of female smoking.
