There were an estimated 1.1 million current smokers in Palestine (West Bank & Gaza strip) as of 2022, corresponding to a current smoking prevalence of 33.5% (55.1% among males and 12.1% among females). In 2022, 26.3% of Palestinians were smoking daily, representing an estimated 847,352 daily smokers. Daily smoking prevalence was 6% among females and 46.8% among males in 2022. An estimated 2,084 deaths (1,717 male deaths and 367 female deaths) in Palestine (West Bank & Gaza strip) were caused by tobacco smoking in 2022, representing an annual death percentage of 10.69%.

El enfoque de este informe de GSTHR es Asia. El sesenta por ciento de los fumadores del mundo vive en esta región y aquí se produce casi la mitad de las muertes mundiales por fumar. Asia también alberga a nueve de cada diez consumidores de tabaco sin combustión (SLT), lo que provoca altas tasas de cáncer oral. En varios países, la salud pública se ve gravemente socavada cuando los gobiernos controlan o tienen una participación significativa en empresas tabacaleras nacionales. Se necesitan nuevas soluciones para abordar la amenaza para la salud pública que suponen fumar y el consumo de tabaco, pero los productos de nicotina más seguros están prohibidos en muchos países. ¿Mejoraría la reducción de daños del tabaco la salud pública en Asia? Y, de ser así, ¿cuáles son los obstáculos que se interponen en su camino?
