En Kazajistán, el tabaquismo sigue siendo un importante problema de salud pública. En 2022, había aproximadamente 2,8 millones de fumadores actuales en el país. La prevalencia del tabaquismo actual en adultos era del 21,4%, con una marcada diferencia entre géneros: 6,3% en mujeres y 38,3% en hombres. La mortalidad relacionada con el tabaco también es elevada. En 2021, el consumo de tabaco provocó unas 15.100 muertes, incluidas 2.400 entre mujeres y 12.700 entre hombres. Esto indica que el tabaquismo fue responsable del 8,3% de todas las muertes en el país, con un 2,83% en mujeres y un 12,92% en hombres ese año. Kazajistán aplica diversas medidas regulatorias sobre los productos de tabaco; la venta de cigarrillos está permitida bajo restricciones específicas. La publicidad, la promoción y la compra de cigarrillos por internet y a través de máquinas expendedoras son ilegales. La edad mínima para la venta es de 21 años y también existen restricciones para fumar en lugares públicos. Volumen minorista de los mercados de cigarrillos y HTP en países seleccionados
Las ventas de productos de tabaco calentado (HTP) han experimentado un crecimiento significativo desde 2016 en Asia Pacífico y Europa Occidental y Oriental. En muchos países, esto ha coincidido con una disminución de las ventas de cigarrillos. Los datos sobre las ventas minoristas por volumen de cigarrillos y HTP se miden en unidades, pero una unidad de HTP puede no ser un sustituto perfecto para las personas que fuman, ya que contiene una dosis de nicotina menor que un cigarrillo. No obstante, las cifras de ventas minoristas por volumen sugieren diversos efectos de sustitución en los siguientes países:
- sustitución aproximadamente de uno a uno de unidades de HTP por cigarrillos: Hungría, Corea del Sur, Italia, Alemania.

Reducción de daños del tabaco: un problema candente para Asia

El enfoque de este informe de GSTHR es Asia. El sesenta por ciento de los fumadores del mundo vive en esta región y aquí se produce casi la mitad de las muertes mundiales por fumar. Asia también alberga a nueve de cada diez consumidores de tabaco sin combustión (SLT), lo que provoca altas tasas de cáncer oral. En varios países, la salud pública se ve gravemente socavada cuando los gobiernos controlan o tienen una participación significativa en empresas tabacaleras nacionales. Se necesitan nuevas soluciones para abordar la amenaza para la salud pública que suponen fumar y el consumo de tabaco, pero los productos de nicotina más seguros están prohibidos en muchos países. ¿Mejoraría la reducción de daños del tabaco la salud pública en Asia? Y, de ser así, ¿cuáles son los obstáculos que se interponen en su camino?
