En Hungría, se permite fumar tabaco con algunas restricciones. Es obligatorio que los paquetes lleven advertencias sanitarias, la edad mínima para la venta es de 18 años y está prohibido fumar en lugares públicos. Tampoco está permitido comprar estos productos por internet ni en máquinas expendedoras. El impuesto total sobre el tabaco es del 72%. En 2023, había aproximadamente 2,1 millones de fumadores actuales en el país. La prevalencia del tabaquismo en adultos era del 26%, con una mayor incidencia entre los hombres (34,7%) que entre las mujeres (24,5%) en 2022. Ese año, había 2,1 millones de fumadores diarios y la prevalencia diaria de consumo de tabaco en adultos alcanzó el 22,1% en 2023. El consumo de tabaco sigue siendo también una causa importante de mortalidad en Hungría. En 2021, se estima que provocó unas 17.000 muertes, incluyendo 5.200 entre mujeres y 11.800 entre hombres. Esto indica que el consumo de tabaco fue responsable del 11,01% de todas las muertes ese año, incluyendo el 6,63% de las muertes femeninas y el 15,47% de las muertes masculinas.
