In Swaziland also known as Eswatini, the current prevalence of tobacco smoking among adults aged 15 years and older, as of 2024, was reported to be 15.8% among males, while among females, it was only 1.7%, with an overall adult smoking prevalence of 8.6%. This represents a slight increase from 2020, when the rates were 14.2% among males, 0.9% among females, and 7.4% overall. The number of smokers in 2024 was estimated to be 70,000 individuals which reflects an increase from 51,665 in 2020.
In terms of smoking-related mortality, in 2021, there were 370 deaths attributed to smoking, with males accounting for 259 of these deaths and females accounting for 110. Smoking-related deaths constituted 2.09% of all deaths in Swaziland, with 2.7% of male deaths and 1.37% of female deaths. These figures highlight the ongoing public health challenges posed by tobacco smoking in Swaziland, underscoring the need for continued public health measures to mitigate its impacts.
