  • Study: French Teen Vapers Were Less Likely to Smoke Than Non-Vapers

  • Daily smoking has always been very popular amongst French teens. The study titled, “Does e-cigarette experimentation increase the transition to daily smoking among young ever-smokers in France?” looks at whether e-cig experimentation, which is also very common, increases the likelihood of smoking. Using retrospective data from a 2017 French national representative survey of almost 40,000 participants, the researchers analyzed the link between vaping and smoking. The number of participants who had ever smoked was 21,401, and within this group, adolescents who reported having ever used e-cigarettes, were less likely [...]

  • Does e-cigarette experimentation increase the transition to daily smoking among young ever-smokers in France?

  • According to multiple studies, e-cigarette use among adolescents is associated with subsequent smoking initiation. However, little is known about its effect on the transition from smoking initiation to daily smoking. Among French adolescents aged 17, 16.8 % declared current e-cigarette use (1.9 % reported daily use) and 34.1 % cigarette smoking (25.1 % reported daily smoking). Among ever-smokers, adolescents who declared having ever used e-cigarettes were less likely than those who did not to transition to daily smoking at 17: RR = 0.62 95 %CI [0.60 – 0.64]. [...]

  • A good reference reviewing the available evidence on the relation between smoking, vaping and COVID-
19 is the article written by Farsalinos, Barbouni and Nyaura [10] (see also the professional blog entry of

Farsalinos [11]). The authors conclude after reviewing the data from five studies on patients infected by
SARS-CoV-2 that the relation between smoking cigarettes and the severity of COVID-19 in infected
Chinese patients is uncertain and even protective (bearing in mind that 52.1% of Chinese men smoke
whereas only 2.7% of women do).

  • Smokers At Higher Risk Of Severe COVID-19 During Coronavirus Outbreak

  • A leading expert has warned that smokers are likely at increased risk of more severe COVID-19, compared to non-smokers, suggesting that now would be a particularly good time to try and quit or cut down.

“There’s not very much data at this point on COVID-19 in smokers, but we do know from reports from China, smokers seem to be over-represented in groups of people who have severe or critical COVID-19,” said J. Taylor Hays, M.D. Director of the Nicotine Dependence center at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota and Professor of Medicine, Mayo Clinic College of Medicine.
